Works / Community Place Making Gresham Main City Park / Gresham, Oregon

greshammaincitypark-768x512 gresham_maincitypark_smallGreenWorks prepared a design program and master plan for Gresham’s most prominent park located at the foot of Main Street in downtown. Routine flooding of Johnson Creek which bisects the park combined with the need for a “town center” created a unique project which required blending urban design and environmental issues. GreenWorks assisted in the location of a new community center and was a member of a multidisciplinary design team consisting of architects, hydrologists, ecologists, engineers, and a public involvement specialist.

The design process utilized a week-long charrette to gain community support and create a rapid, creative and efficient design effort. GreenWorks was a key member of the week-long community design charrette involving the design team, city staff, invited community leaders and the general public. The process allowed an energetic “graphic brainstorming” session where mixed teams created distinctive themes for the park. These were then shared as a beginning point, then refined and combined to arrive at a preferred plan by the charrette’s end. Other instruments utilized to involve the public included questionnaires, presentations to community groups, newsletters and public meetings. As part of our commitment to community involvement, GreenWorks also established two student internship positions to work on this project, in cooperation with Gresham High School. This project received an Oregon ASLA Merit Award in 2000.
