Vernon school in Northeast Portland was one of many Portland schools suffering from low attendance and dropping report cards. The staff and community decided to make a change and joined forces with Hands on Portland to organize a 10 hour 400 volunteer school improvement day. One of their main visions was a green school site. GreenWorks met with school officials, teachers, Portland Public school district employees, and parents to help create the vision for the school grounds. The Vision Plan or Master Plan included a rain garden that treats storm runoff from the asphalt playground, a native plant garden, outdoor classroom, stormwater swales and raised vegetable gardens. GreenWorks developed clear, precise planting and materials plans and layouts that could be read and implemented by parents and volunteers. The gardens are now a gathering place for students and the community.
