Johnson Creek Oxbow Stream Restoration

GreenWorks partnered with the City of Portland Bureau of Environmental Services to repair and stabilize a severely eroded section of the Johnson Creek Oxbow. The project aimed to restore natural erosion processes, improve floodplain hydrology, and enhance riparian and in-stream habitat.

The team conducted detailed site assessments, updated existing survey data and hydraulic modeling, and developed a habitat-based stabilization approach grounded in ecological restoration principles.

The final design incorporated large wood structures for bank stabilization, excavation of a scour pool to create diverse aquatic habitat, construction of flood refuge areas, and encapsulated soil lifts along the creek banks for stabilization and native riparian planting. These improvements reconnected the creek to its historic floodplain, enhanced habitat complexity, and reduced local flood impacts—returning the site to a more natural and resilient condition.
