Gateway Green
Gateway Green is a 25-acre site located in East Portland at the confluence of two major interstate highways, I-84 and I-205. This previously unused remnant landscape had a host of complicated public access issues that made the prospect of establishing a park on the site challenging. GreenWorks collaborated with local stakeholders to create an overall vision and recreational program for Gateway Green that would improve environmental conditions and restore habitat while providing a regional destination for off-road cycling. As Portland’s first urban bike park, Gateway Green offers singletrack trails, a bike skills area, a gravity area, and a cyclocross course. It also features soft surface trails, paved multi-use trails, ample open space, and a nature-based play area. Sustainable features of the park include the reuse of existing on-site gravel as base rock for new gravel trails, diverse landscape plantings to promote biodiversity and wildlife habitat, and sustainable on-site stormwater management achieved with open vegetated swales.
