A note from GreenWorks principals Mike Faha, Gill Williams, and Paul Agrimis:

Started in the late 1980s with a very intentional focus on environmental design, Greenworks has evolved into a diverse and innovative team with common purpose: Providing landscape architecture design that functions for people and for natural processes. GreenWorks is an idea that has grown from the vision of its founders and been formed through three generations of talented team members. As we move forward we will do so with a new brand that better suits our mission and our sensibilities. Today there is nothing more certain than change, and as we approach the issues of the day, one thing is certain: Evolution is essential.

Mike Faha’s founding inspiration for developing a professional practice was two-fold: providing planning and design for compact livable communities while also protecting natural resources. Reconciling that tension has guided our work ever since. The GreenWorks brand emerged after Mike Abbate joined the firm in 1996 and our passion for embracing new trends in green infrastructure approaches led to serving municipal clients throughout the Portland region and beyond to expand sustainable site design approaches from site scales to landscape-levels scales: park planning and design, trails planning and design, integrated transportation infrastructure, urban design and place-making, public involvement, green infrastructure at micro- and macro-scales, floodplain and wetland restoration, watershed planning.

Parks and Recreation facilities have always been considered as basic infrastructure at GreenWorks and we actively advocate for parks as non-negotiable municipal services along with water, wastewater, streets and trails, fire and public safety protections. In an increasingly densifying urban environment, the ability for the public to recreate and connect to nature has belatedly become recognized as a fundamental need. We are involved in efforts to provide systematic approaches for community recreation needs; develop inclusive recreation opportunities and finding ways to connect kids with nature. And the times call for an expansion of thinking for how we will deliver green infrastructure services equitably going forward.

None of us have previously experienced the upheaval we are currently enduring. From fighting a pandemic, issues of equity and access, to climate change, to an upended economy, and the resulting political uncertainty, we are all reflecting on where we are and where we are going. Our individual responses to today’s issues will influence how we will collectively solve those same issues. We seek out alignment with like-minded colleagues and professionals to help us to articulate and activate that response. How do we respond?

GreenWorks is continuing to evolve to develop appropriate responses for the clients and communities we serve through new thinking, fresh perspectives, and a new third generation of leadership. Gill Williams is now our Managing Principal with the support of Mike Faha and Paul Agrimis. We will continue to be true to our core business while adjusting for outside influences. We will continue to serve the needs of the built, natural, and social environments and do so with a greater emphasis on equity and sustainability for our practice and for our developing practitioners.

There are tremendous challenges that we look forward to meeting. Our brand update is one that we are excited to share with you as one that more genuinely reflects our mission and our sensibilities.
