GreenWorks alum Cory Gallo (‘04) stopped in to have lunch with us last week. He’s in town researching urban farms for a project at Mississippi State University, where he’s now an associate professor. He recently won a national award from The Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture. As things tend to do around here, we nerded-out on stormwater.

As visualization and design technology continues to evolve and advance, communities and stakeholders have the opportunity to experience design concepts in a digitally-rich environment. Software like Lumion (a program that integrates with SketchUp to provide real-time renderings) offers our designers both challenges and exciting opportunities to continue expanding and refining their skill sets to provide our clients with the best possible results.

Our resident plant expert, Bhronwhyn Dean, graciously organized a lunch-and-learn focusing on plants with winter interest in our recent “Greenworks Plants Group” session. Drawing from inspiration in her own garden, Bhronwhyn brought in a vase filled with fern cuttings, flowers, woody branches, and shrubs for the day. We discussed the idea that ‘winter interest’ can include far more than color, including ornamental bark, color of stems, winter outlines/tracery, grasses, winter flowers, texture, fruits / berries, and fragrance as part of our discussion.
